YOU HAVE CHANGED MY BIRTHDAY

In my later years, I have come to downplay my birthday each year, not wanting to recognize that I was turning one year older, not that it was a great concern for me. It was just another day within the year. However, your cancer this year has changed all that.

First, and foremost, it is OUR birthday, not mine nor yours… OUR birthday….!!! As we enter into our elder years, we must recognize, celebrate and treasure each year we have spent together, whether that is enjoying each other’s company in person or just talking on the phone. If this year was to teach us at least one lesson, it is that we cannot take our health and our time on this earth for granted any more. It is a time, once a year, where I must tell you how much you mean to me, how much I love you and really appreciate all that we have shared as being twins. We are a “set” not to be broken apart, yet that is inevitable. But, that time is not now and hopefully will be very far off into the distant future.

Starting with our upcoming birthday, I look more forward to all the times you and I will tell stories of how we have lived, cried, laughed, generally how we gave back and enjoyed family, friends, co-workers and community. Life is too short and we must make each day count, starting with each other, and working our way out. So, yet again, my older (by 2 minutes) and wiser brother teaches me another life lesson.

Although conditions for our birthday this year will be less than ideal, let’s savor and enjoy what we can this past year, and move on knowing there will be better times ahead. Wishing you a truly HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Billy…!!!

I just read your post about Bill being cancer free, that is fantastic news.

I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and also a malignant mass on my lung in October of last year. I have had both removed within two months of detection and start chemo on the 12th of this month. This gives me hope and happiness that a long time ago friend survived and is now cancer free.

Not sure how "healthy" Billy is feeling but they are welcome to come to Austin as well for a quick getaway if they just want a change of pace.

I finally made my Relay for Life page!

Hi everyone! It's that time of year again! Relay for Life is April 4-5 this year and I am participating with my sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon. Relay for Life happens once a year and is a walk from 6pm on April 4 to 6am on April 5. It is held in the gym at my school and countless groups participate to raise money to finally find a cure for cancer. I participated last year and it was a really moving experience. It never occurred to me how many people's lives are touched by cancer in some way or another.

Recently, a close neighbor was diagnosed with several different types of cancer. For those of you who don't know Bill, he has a contagious laugh that can be heard booming throughout the neighborhood and is one of the most kind hearted people that you will ever meet. He has remained optimistic throughout his treatment and his prognosis is good. I ask that all of you keep him in your thoughts and prayers. This year I will be walking for a cure for Bill and all of those who are touched by this horrible disease. Every little bit helps!

Been thinking about you both quite a lot and have been getting updates from David & Jen. Please add me to your list, so I get your awesome emails. Attitude counts for sooooo much in life and, I believe, can be a significant part of your recovery. You’ve both always looked on the “bright side of life” and that attitude will you serve you well. We all do what we have to do in life - but how we do it is what really counts. I love your aggressive, upbeat approach to dealing with this and wish you all the best for a healthy & happy recovery. I was so happy to get this email this morning. I woke up many times thinking about you both today and wondering what the doctors would say to you today. It sounds positive, which is WONDERFUL. I know you still have a long way to go but, the MD Anderson sounds like the best place to be.

Let me know if you would like me to come visit, I would love to see you both but completely understand you both need to do what is right for you two, not everyone else. You both being the most compassionate people I know would probably forgo your own comfort for others, I don’t want that, I want to do what is best for you guys. So let me know.

Such awesome news! Yes, health insurance is great until you need some actual treatment. The companies are so used to collecting money for doing nothing, it's like they can't imagine that you would then have the nerve to actually ask them to pay for a medical procedure. But they don't know the Flahertys, obviously! You and your family continue to be amazing in never giving up or giving in to the cancer or the callousness of the system. So glad to hear things are looking up! Best of luck with everything!!

Bill, you look great and it's nice to see a porch that's not covered with over a foot of snow. I can't tell you how good it felt to read your email. I know I haven't been good about staying in touch but you've been in my thoughts a bunch... All those reports on the various aspects of your treatment and cancer are huge, I have no doubt you'll regain from those setbacks caused by the various treatments, especially with Dr Denise by your side.
